Empathic communication in early years education Sweden

May 29, 2018 - 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

This 4-day trip is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a culture of empathy early years education in Sweden.

May 29, 2018 @ 10:00 am - June 1, 2018 @ 3:00 pm

This educational excursion is for anyone who is interested in learning more about a culture of empathy in pre-school education in Sweden. It’s for all educators who are interested in exploring, learning and discovering new practices and sharing pedagogy. The teaching model in Swedish schools is based on the motto ‘freedom with responsibility’. Equality, inclusiveness and democracy are high values that are clearly evident in all education settings. You will fly to Stockholm and will travel to a comfortable hotel in the City where you will be greeted by the owner of a well known, highly regarded pre-school (kindergarten, förskola) group. DSC7921_la¦èg1-300x200Ängbybarnens pre-schools are well known for their involvement in a European project concerning peace education, for implementing the Reggio Emilia approach and an empathic model of communication, known as NVC. They received the  Stockholm City Council Award in recognition of their high quality early years provision, for two years consecutively and have some very unique practices around meal times.

We will visit a number of Angbybarnensforskolor pre-schools to learn about the system in Sweden as well as being introduced to the unique service and practices offered by this group, who prime goal is to nurture children’s self-esteem. The staff are skilled and experience in reflective practice and action research and are very keen to share and collaborate. There will be plenty of time for you to be with the staff and with children.

We had an amazing time last year, here are a few comments from the  participants who were asked if the trip met their expectations:

“YES! On so many levels, I love that children are given freedom of expression. I wish the system in the UK could be more heavily weighed in favour of the child and that it did away with a culture of fear forced on us by inspections, the media and the public.”

“Yes, over and above, all the experiences, not just in the settings but also activities arranged for us out of the environment where staff team joined.”

“Yes and beyond. I have so much in my mind that I’m thinking how will I logically put it all into practice—however, I am going to try! Empathic communication is at the heart of these settings and I need to know more about it.”
