I first heard this song at a training led by Dr Marshall Rosenberg in London during 2006.
Marshall was a visionary, a compassionate leader, his work changed my life and has become my life. Thousands of us grieve the loss of Marshall and we celebrate his life and continue his work.
Marshall Rosenberg is the founder of Nonviolent Communication (NVC). He passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2015, at home surrounded by his wife and family members.
Nonviolent Communication, sometimes known as compassionate or mindful communication, is the integration of thought, language and communication. It offers a practice that unfolds an emotionally intelligent way of relating. NVC helps us to:
- Build the inner resources and skills we need for transforming struggles and conflicts into peaceful solutions.
- It supports us to see our own inner beauty, to celebrate our strengths and to see the beauty of others.
- Helps us to speak about our concerns without blaming others for them.
Children and adults learn to express themselves authentically.
The principles and practices of NVC help increase awareness of our thoughts, feelings and actions we take. We learn to express ourselves authentically with care and consideration for all.
To educate the mind without educating the heart is no education at all – Aristotle
Nonviolent Communication teaches us to translate evaluations, labels and judgements into observations, feelings, needs and requests. We hear in ways that are more likely to foster connection, opening new possibilities for learning, relating and evolving. It motivates us to understand each other, to collaborate, create and cooperate together. It’s about love, responsibility and social action.
In this video, Marshall explains some of the key principles of NVC.
An expression of appreciation
Thank you, Marshall, for creating Nonviolent Communication. I feel immense gratitude for a practice that has made an incredible difference in my life. I remember the first NVC training I attended with you in London, Scotland and Switzerland. The light bulbs went on and I felt like standing up and telling the whole world about it. I discovered I simply needed to live this way.
You have left this life and now understand the ultimate mystery. One day we will understand this too. You have left us an amazing legacy, I thank you.

This is what Jeff Brown, CNVC trainer wrote about Marshall’s work:
Marshall’s work offers us a cohesive approach to creating peace in the world… peace within, peace with others and peace in the world
Thank you, Marshall, for your love, for helping me grow into awareness of myself and others and for our social impact. I thank you for inspiring me to learn and to practice NVC which brings me into the presence of NOW.
