This series of interactive sessions presents intellectual and experiential opportunities, for you to deepen your understanding of empathy, as a way of behaving and communicating with our children.
The content of the material presented is primarily inspired by Nonviolent Communication which is the work of Dr Marshall Rosenberg. Also, High/Scope, the work of David Weikart et al, Alfie Kohn, Stuart Shanker, Daniel Siegal, Stephen Porges, Rolando Toro, and so many other educationalists, philosophers and neuroscientists.
Aristotle the Greek philosopher says:
Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all!
My experience professionally and personally, over the past 30 years, has taught me that empathy alongside an understanding of neuroscience, human development and nonviolent communication, has a significant impact on our emotional wellbeing and ability to learn. You can read more about my experience here.
It’s quite obvious that human beings who are nurtured with love and care, are naturally more adept at kindness, decision making, resilience and cooperation.
We reflect on our interactions and teaching strategies. Being mindful of the system and the challenges that arise, we consider the impact of power dynamics, punishment, reward systems, competition and labelling.
We review the way that empathetic practices can foster a culture of peace.
To gain full benefit from the group meetings, it’s recommended that you commit to attending all sessions in the series.
What will you get?
Through a series of themed sessions, we consider how we employ empathy in our daily interactions with children at home and in early year’s settings and schools.
- We consider why empathy practices are important through the early years and beyond.
- Uncover some of the principles, skills and practices (inspired by Nonviolent Communication (NVC) the work of Dr Marshall Rosenberg) that support empathic mindsets to grow.
- Practice applying NVC to situations we encounter with children (practicing co-regulation, supporting cooperation, expressing appreciation and more!)
